Caroline (Candice Accola) had a major identity crisis on her 18 birthday in Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 11, “Our Town.” Actually, it was more of an un-birthday, because the new vampire had to face the fact that she wouldn’t grow old any longer. Just as she was getting used to the idea of immortality (thanks, in some part, to Klaus’s mentoring), Caroline realizes she might be staring death in the face after all.

The vampires learn their fates are tied to an Original’s bloodline, and though Caroline, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), and Stefan (Paul Wesley) all trace back to the same OV, Tyler (Michael Trevino) at least was sired by Klaus (Joseph Morgan). According to what Candice told TV Guide, those affected are going to deal with the news in different ways. "The theme of mortality definitely rings true throughout the remaining episodes of the season," says Candice, adding that vampires who have lived full, undead lives might not feel as cheated as a newbie like Caroline.

Mystic Falls is full of would-be martyrs, and it sounds like the finale is no exception. "Who's willing to sacrifice their lives for the greater good?" asks Candice.

Given their track records, we’re going to guess Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) will volunteer for the job — even though neither is a vampire.
