War. What is it good for? A flashback episode of The Vampire Diaries, naturally. Season 4, Episode 8, “We’ll Always Have Bourbon Street” partly takes place in New Orleans in 1942, and the Salvatore boys will be in uniform. Oh, yes.

But first, what’s up with Elena (Nina Dobrev)? Both Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) have to play detective because of the younger Salvatore’s fears regarding the baby vamp. Their search takes them all the way to New Orleans. It’s been nearly 70 years since their last visit, but they seek out someone who might remember them: Charlotte (Madeline Zima), an old girlfriend of Damon’s.

Back in Mystic Falls, Elena shocks Caroline (Candice Accola) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) during their girls’ night with some information. (She forgot the s’mores?)

Kimberly (Alyssa Diaz), one of Klaus’s (Joseph Morgan) hybrids, gets a visit from Tyler (Michael Trevino). The mission was put in motion by Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), and the confrontation turns violent.

Finally, Damon must make an agonizing choice.
