We love those moments on The Vampire Diaries that make us gasp, pause, and rewind — and Season 4, Episode 10, “After School Special” is chock full of them. Here are the scenes that left our jaws agape.

5. Kol uncovers Professor Shane’s plan
Now, you know you’re Grade A nuts when a psychopathic, gazillion year old vampire can’t handle your truth. Still when Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) tried to torture deets about the vampire cure out of Professor Shane (David Alpay), he got more than he bargained for — he learned the professor was trying to bring his boogeyman back to life. Figuring they were both working towards the same goal, the half-drowned Ph.D told the Original siblings that he was only looking for the vampire cure because he wanted to resurrect Silas, the original immortal man who was buried with it. He confessed to unearthing an ancient headstone, locating the grave and killing “dozens” in a blood sacrifice. “Those massacres are a pain to engineer,” Shane said before going on a rant that would make a cult leader jealous. “Silas will raise the dead,” he said enthusiastically. “He will bring back every last soul who died on his behalf.” With that, Kol had heard enough. He lifted a copper pipe and skewered Shane with it, saying, “No!”

4. Damon goes dark for love
We’ve gotta give Damon (Ian Somerhalder) credit: The elder Salvatore tried to find the cure for vampirism without forcing Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) to kill innocent people. He really did. But then Elena (Nina Dobrev) told Damon she loved him and doing the right thing seemed to take too unbearably long for the 160-year-old vampire. So Damon led Jer out past the edge of town, knowing that Klaus (Joseph Morgan) had stocked a honky-tonk bar with people who’d been turned against their will. “You said you were going to convince Klaus to do this another way,” Jeremy said as he eyed the roomful of undead people. Unapologetically, Damon replied, “Well, I thought about it. Then I realized his idea is better.”

3. Rebekah forces Elena to break Stefan’s heart
Original sister Rebekah (Claire Holt) was hurting. And you know what they say about a woman scorned. The repeated daggerings… the betrayals…  the loss of her relationship with Stefan (Paul Wesley)… Bex took it all out on the personification of her pain by compelling Elena to truthfully answer any question she asked while Stefan, equally helpless, sat across the table from her, forced to listen. “I dare you to tell Stefan the truth about Damon,” Rebekah said. Elena could not refuse. “Being with Damon makes me happy,” she started. “When I’m with him, it feels unpredictable, like I’m free.” The love of Stefan’s life would go on to tell him why she slept with his brother, that he makes her feel like a broken toy and that she’s no longer in love with him. “Did that hurt?” Rebekah asked Stefan after Elena finished. “Welcome to the last 900 years of my life.”

2. Elena confesses her love for Damon
Young Miss Gilbert had been calling Damon all week, leaving him messages, telling him it wasn’t all about the sire-bond. But he never picked up. Instead he just listened to the messages over and over. But not this time. This time D answered. After warning Damon that she’d told Stefan the truth about what happened between them, Elena shared a most personal realization. “It’s the most real thing that I ever felt in my entire life,” she said of her feelings. “I love you Damon. I love you.” For a moment the snarky Salvatore was stunned into silence.

1. Stefan asks to be erased and gets denied
In a move we didn’t see coming, Rebekah offered Elena the most indecent of proposals. “I could compel him — erase every memory he has of you,” she said of Stefan. “Every day you’ve spent together. Every kiss. Every lie. Every ounce of pain. I could take away every bit of love he has from you. Give you both a clean slate. Just say the word.” Elena looked sickened. She said nothing. It was Stefan who spoke. “Do it,” he said. “Erase it all. Every memory.” And he meant it. Rebekah turned with a smirk on her face. She saw how desperately her ex wanted to be free of his love for Elena. She knew he meant it. So she rescinded her offer. “No,” Bex said with a laugh. “It would be far too easy. I refuse to make you forget her the way Klaus made you forget me… Consider your eternity of pain my revenge, Stefan.”
