We love those moments on The Vampire Diaries that make us gasp, pause, and rewind — and Season 4, Episode 6, “We All Go a Little Mad Sometimes” is chock full of them. Here are the scenes that left our jaws agape.

5. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) double-crosses hybrid Chris
Poor Chris never had a chance. He signed his death warrant the second he stepped aside to let Stefan (Paul Wesley) free Elena (Nina Dobrev). Sadly, he didn’t know it. Even worse, for a second it looked as if he might get away. As he opened the door of Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) manse to flee, Stefan punched him. Then while Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) and Tyler protested, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) raised an ax and beheaded Chris. The hybrid was a pawn in a game to stop Elena’s hallucinations.

4. Caroline pulls one over on Klaus (and us)
It was the type of early morning visit no one likes to get. But it’s especially bad after a night of binge drinking. Caroline (Candice Accola) barged into Tyler’s house with a box in hand. “I brought your stuff,” she announced. “Old laptop, your jersey, the charm bracelet.” The vampire glared at her hybrid beau and his wolf friend Hayley. Tyler reluctantly took the box, looking sheepish. Klaus almost giggled with glee. “By the breakup drama unfolding before me, I assume you’ve met Hayley,” he said to Caroline. Then the Original vampire cleared the room of his hybrids, telling Tyler. “I think you’ve got more important things to deal with, mate.” A second after he left, Hayley and Caroline smiled at each other. The breakup was just a ruse.

3. Elena accidentally stabs Jeremy
Things like this only happen in Mystic Falls. Elena was caught in one of Connor’s (Todd Williams) guilt-induced hallucinations. She thought she was fighting the slain hunter when she grabbed a knife and shoved it into his neck. It was the sound of the knife slicing his skin that got us. Connor grimaced in pain, gasping. Elena stepped back and realized she’d just killed her little brother.

2. Elena throws in the towel
Connor Jordan’s vindictive ghost appeared to Elena as Katherine (Nina Dobrev), but it was her mother’s face that convinced her to end it all. “This bridge is where your life should have ended,” Ghost Mama Gilbert told Elena. Or so our girl thought. With one glance down at the ring on Elena’s hand, Ghost Mama planted the idea of suicide by sunlight. “It’s the right thing to do,” she said. And our girl listened. “I’m a monster, and I deserve to die,” Elena said. Then she took off her daywalker ring and dropped it over the side of the Wickery Bridge.

1.  Stefan breaks up with Elena
Sure we heard the rumors. But we didn’t believe it would actually happen. And, yet it did. After devoting his life to protecting and loving Elena, the youngest Salvatore finally had enough. Was it the fact that Elena stabbed Stefan? No. It was a simple admission about his brother. “Something has changed between Damon and me,” Elena said. “Much more than it ever used to be…” Stefan knew where she was going. “Your feelings for him have been magnified,” he added. But understanding why his girlfriend gravitated toward his brother didn’t make it OK. “Before, when I was the Ripper, I understood why you cared for him. I mean, I practically drove you to it,” Stefan said. “But now, I can’t do this, Elena. Not anymore.” And thus he ended their relationship.
