The landscape of Mystic Falls has been a little grayer since Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) died. With her Chunky Monkey ice cream, cutie boyfriend, and terrible parenting skills, Jenna was a beacon of normalcy on The Vampire Diaries. After she was killed off in Season 2, she made a brief reappearance in Season 3, but Sara Canning has her own show now.
Sara has returned to her native Canada to play Dylan Weir on SPACE Channel’s Primeval: New World. This time around, Sara is hip to what’s going on in the less-than-normal world she inhabits. Her character is a predator expert, meaning she hunts for prehistoric menaces, such as dinosaurs, as part of a team of scientists.
“She sort of comes upon Evan [Niall Matter] in the middle of the woods, and all of a sudden there are dinosaurs and these weird flashing lights. If that’s your first meeting with someone, you can’t help but probably be angered but at the same time rather intrigued as well,” Sara tells Sci-Fi and TV Talk.
And while Jenna was pretty low-key, Sara’s new character is more kick-butt. “Something else that’s been cool about playing Dylan is that she’s super-tough,” says Sara. “She needs to be, though, with the entire team risking their lives every day and witnessing a great deal of death.”
We’re glad to see Sara is doing so well post-TVD. She told the site, “The Vampire Diaries was an important turning point in my career. Not only did I get to move to the States, but it was also my first time being a series regular, which is a big deal. Instead of having three weeks on a TV movie-of-the-week to develop your character, you’re suddenly given a season to do it. I really loved playing Jenna and working on that show. I would have happily continued doing so, but they have so many significant deaths on that program, all of which shape the journeys of the three lead characters.”
Aw. In addition to her new show, Sara has worked on the TV movie Hannah’s Law and has several films coming up, including I Think I Do and Corvus.
And now that both Sara and her old castmate Matt Davis (Alaric Saltzman) are in Vancouver (where he’s filming his new show, Cult), let’s hope they get together for some Chunky Monkey every now and again.
