Klaus (Joseph Morgan), the veritable king of all Originals on The Vampire Diaries, is the baddie we love to hate, hate to love, and, of course for some of us — love to love. It’s no small wonder, all things being equal, that we’re all chomping at the bit to learn as much as we can about his new show, The Originals.
We have seen Klaus kill without a thought, scheme, backstab, threaten, and connive with the best of them. We have also seen, through his interactions with Caroline (Candice Accola), a fair bit of his softer side. Is Klaus a cold-blooded killer just as likely to rip your heart out as he is to pat you on the head? Absolutely. But is he also capable of getting a schoolboy crush and maybe drawing a picture of you petting a horse and leaving it by your bedside? Totally.
Klaus’ dynamic character, along with his smoldering looks, keeps us hanging off his every word despite his psychopathic tendencies. It’s also why we we are so psyched at the prospect of his Vampire Diaries spin-off series, The Originals. (I am secretly hoping they decide to change the name and call it The Klaus Project, and that it is a twenty-two minute sitcom, starring Joseph Morgan as a boy just trying to make it in the big city, as a giant Punk’d style prank on all of us.)
Since The Originals is unlikely to unfold as I jokingly detailed in my parenthetical, let’s talk about a few things we’re like to see happen in this newest branch of The Vampire Diaries family tree.
The Fate of Klaroline?
Ardent fans of Klaroline might need to start their period of mourning of now. With The Originals taking place in New Orleans, home to some strong TVD related memories — and no word of Candice Accola signing on as a regular cast member — the idea of the twosome being a touchstone of the new show seems slim.
That said, we know how much the citizens of Mystic Falls love to travel, and New Orleans has been a destination of theirs in the past. Plus, Caroline has had more than her fair share of experience of long distance relationships — exhibit Tyler’s prolonged absences. But, if Klaus’ recent dalliance with announced The Originals cast member Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) is any indication, he won’t be hurting for romance on the new show.
O Brother Where Art Thou?
Elijah Mikaelson (Daniel Gillies) and his much-hyped recent return on The Vampire Diaries coincided with news that Daniel Gillies would be joining The Originals as a regular cast member. The recently released plot synopsis for the in-show pilot, reveals that Elijah follows Klaus to New Orleans, in the hopes of ensuring his brother finds the redemption he believes he needs.
Whatever happens, you can be sure - we’ll be watching, and on the edge of our seats.
