Most of the adults in Mystic Falls are walking around with targets on their backs. It seems few people last past the age of 40, and those that do are pretty lousy parents. Fathers are usually absentee, jerks, or dead. (We can’t really fault them for that last one, though.) But it’s the mothers on The Vampire Diaries who really take the store-bought cake. (It’s not like any of these ladies are baking homemade treats for their offspring.) Let’s go through the track records of Mystic Falls’ worst mothers.
Kelly Donovan: Whew, boy. Where to start with Matt’s (Zach Roerig) mom? Not only has she hooked up with his jailbait best friend/her daughter’s ex-boyfriend, she completely checked out when Vicki(Kayla Ewell) died. Not that she was paying the bills to begin with, but she hasn’t been seen since her daughter’s funeral, and poor Matt doesn’t even have health insurance.
Sheriff Forbes: Now that she has a daughter who’s a vampire, the good Sheriff has mellowed a bit — but it definitely took her awhile to come around to Caroline’s (Candice Accola) new fangs. First, she enlisted Matt (Zach Roerig) to spy on Caroline, then she insisted vampires don’t have a soul. Plus, when Caroline had been verveined and kidnapped by Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) mom (more on her later), it took Ms. Forbes over a day to realize her daughter was MIA. We know you’re busy covering up vampire killings, Sheriff, but maybe you need to check in with your kid a tad more frequently.
Mayor Lockwood: You’re not going to win Parent of the Year if you have no idea your kid is a werewolf. It also doesn’t help when you take a dart gun to his girlfriend. Most of her alliances with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and the rest of the Originals are meant to protect her son, but she also lets him leave town for extended periods of time without much concern for his welfare.
Isobel Flemming: This lady gave up her daughter, became a vampire, and then delivered Elena (Nina Dobrev) to Klaus. Most of the things Isobel did were to protect her daughter or under compulsion, but there were 17 whole years when she never came to visit her.
Abby White: There’s not a lot to say about this witch-turned-vampire. Instead of taking care of her own daughter, Bonnie’s (Kat Graham) mom disappeared before could even spell (or spell) and found a surrogate son. Then she repeated the cycle over again after Bon-Bon got a taste of what it was like to have a mom again. That has to burn like a vampire in the sun.
Esther Mikaelson: Like many of the parents in TVD, Esther wanted to protect her children. She went so far as to turn them into vampires to keep them alive, but the plan backfired when she realized what they’d be capable of. Since then, she’s spent most of her time (when she wasn’t dead) trying to kill them all, even the nicer ones.
