The big mystery of The Vampire Diaries Season 4 all started with Connor (Todd Williams) and his not-so-visible tattoo. Then, courtesy of Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Rebekah (Claire Holt), we took a trip back through time, where we discovered the unimaginable. Could there be a cure for vampirism? We’re still not totally sure, but regardless, Klaus seems pretty determined to be the first to find it. But why?

He’s already said that he wouldn’t take the cure if given the chance. Sure, there was that one moment he shared with a hummingbird, but other than that, Klaus likes being the biggest and baddest thing out there. So that brings us back to the question of why. Why search so hard for a cure that you’re not interested in taking?

Well, let’s not forget Klaus’s achilles heel: loneliness. And what is his favorite way of avoiding loneliness? Creating an army of hybrid soldiers, of course. And due to the fact he just killed all of his hybrids, except for Tyler (Michael Trevino), we’re willing to bet Klaus wants to find that cure now more than ever. You know, so he can turn Elena (Nina Dobrev) human again and use her doppelganger blood to create a new family.

Right now, it’s all about doppelganger blood for Klaus, mainly thanks to Rebekah, who destroyed the last of his stash in the Season 4 opener. And once he gets Elena’s blood, Klaus wants nothing more than to destroy the cure… or so he says.

So why does he want the cure? As far as we know, it’s to turn Elena human and then destroy the cure forever. But could he have another motive we’re missing? Would Klaus really destroy the cure? Keeping it somewhere only he knows could give him yet another life advantage… just sayin’.
