There were definitely a few moments that had us tearing up in The Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 3, “The End of the Affair” — Caroline (Candice Accola) crying in Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) arms, for one — but the way Stefan (Paul Wesley) turned on Elena (Nina Dobrev) was far more upsetting than watching The Ripper force a man to drink his wife’s blood. (Shudder, by the way.)

When Stefan told Elena that he wanted her to leave and didn’t want to return to Mystic Falls, our hearts broke for her. But we also wondered why, if he really meant it, he didn’t just compel her to forget him. The last time Stefan slipped off the veggie vampire rails, he compelled a Miss Mystic Falls contestant not to be afraid of him as he debated whether or not to give in to his hunger. Taking away her fear was kind (though it was overshadowed by the fact that he snacked on her), but Stefan refused to assuage any of Elena’s pain. Whether this is because he still can’t let go of her — regardless of what he said — or because he was too far gone to think of this course of action, is debatable.
