Supernatural? Yes, vampire
Age: Over 1,000
Dating status: Single and on the rebound from Katherine Pierce
Combine more than 1,000 years as a vampire, a heightened sense of morality and killer cheekbones, and you’ve got Elijah Mikaelson, the first Original sibling to arrive on The Vampire Diaries.
Born more than 1,000 years ago, Elijah was one of Esther’s seven children. After the deaths of four of his siblings, including Finn and Kol (RIP), Elijah is now the older brother of Rebekah and half-brother of Klaus. His father was Mikael, the vampire hunter Klaus killed in Season 3.
As young men in the 11th century, Elijah and Klaus both fell in love with a woman named Tatia, the original Petrova. In order to end their feud and protect her family from the werewolves, Esther used Tatia’s blood and the immortality of the ancient White Oak tree to turn her husband and all of her children into vampires. After Esther was killed, Elijah pledged his allegiance to his younger brother Klaus, not realizing that Klaus had been the one who murdered their mother.
We then caught up with Elijah in England 1492, when he fell in love with Katerina, the doppelganger that Klaus needed to break the curse that kept his werewolf side dormant. But after Katerina turned herself into a vampire to escape her fate and Klaus began daggering all of Elijah’s siblings, the two brothers parted ways.
It wasn’t until Elijah found the next doppelganger, Elena Gilbert, that we met him. Elijah planned to use her and the ritual to kill his own brother. But when Klaus promised to reunite him with their family, Elijah let him go. Sadly, Klaus didn’t waste much time before reuniting Elijah with his family... by daggering him and placing him in a coffin.
In Season 3, after Elena learned that Klaus had been the one to kill Esther, Damon pulled the dagger out of Elijah in hopes of getting his help. From there, Elijah undaggered his fellow siblings and reunited his family. And thanks to Bonnie and her mother, Abby, we soon realized that Esther wasn’t dead after all. The Originals were back together, but for how long?
While on the Other Side, Esther had witnessed her children’s wrongdoings, and so she linked them all together in an effort to kill them and rid the world of vampires. Knowing this,
Elijah kidnapped Elena and forced the Salvatore brothers to turn Abby into a vampire, putting a stop to Esther’s plan. The siblings were unlinked, and Elijah left town once again.
At the end of Season 3, Elijah got word that his brother had been dessicated in a coffin, and he showed up in Elena’s doorway to retrieve the body. But after learning that hunter Alaric used the White Oak stake on Klaus, Elijah thought his brother was dead and broke our hearts again by leaving.
Somewhere during the hunt for the cure, Katherine found her way back into Elijah’s heart. She wanted him to help her barter with Klaus: the cure for her freedom. But when Elijah learned that Katherine had killed Jeremy Gilbert, he decided that he could not trust her. He took the cure back to Mystic Falls and ended up accidentally handing it over to Silas, who appeared to him as Rebekah.
After breaking things off with Katherine, Elijah followed his brother to New Orleans, where he discovered that werewolf Hayley is pregnant with Klaus’s child. He then convinced his younger brother to stay in town and give family a chance.
