After five years on The Vampire Diaries, it’s no surprise that Ian Somerhalder’s (Damon Salvatore) personal and professional lives are starting to overlap. HitFix caught up with the hunky actor at Comic-Con last weekend and asked him about his character heading into the light with Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) and how his professional life is making an impact on the show.
“I think it’s the lack of light, because the Other Side is a little dark and we’re dead, that sort of thing,” Ian said about crossing over in the Season 5 finale. “These storylines have been told over the course of five years, the dynamics are changing — it’s sort of a reboot.”
Sounds like things will be changing when Season 6 begins this fall, but just how different will things be this year? “By virtue of the dynamics created by the molding of different characters, I think it’s going to be very interesting and it’s been a long time coming,” Ian teased. “In regards to Bonnie and myself being on that Other Side, it’s a great thing.”
But let’s get real, we’re more interested in seeing what Damon and Bonnie will be doing wherever they are. These two aren’t exactly the best of friends — though Ian says they had “an exorbitant amount of chemistry early on — but now they’re being thrown together in a pretty mysterious circumstance.
“These two characters have been through so much together. And on a more personal or actor level, Katerina Graham and I work with the same acting coach,” Ian said about interacting with Kat more this season. “What’s great about that is she gets to work with Kat and I individually and then Kat and I together. We get to create this work, this connective tissue between what happens in our own lives personally and infuse it and weave it into the text. What’s great about that is that it becomes very real and profound.”
