Veronica Mars Movie Gets Official 2014 Release Date (UPDATE: It Gets Released Online on Same Day!)

UPDATE (2/22/14): Are you excited about seeing the Veronica Mars movie but not super excited about having to leave your couch to do so? You're in luck, as the film will be available to buy or rent online on March 14, the same day it hits theaters, according to Wall Street Journal.

In a groundbreaking move, Warner Bros. has decided to make the film available in theaters and on VOD on the same day, marking the first time that any of the six major film studios have ever done so.

Veronica Mars is being released in about 270 theaters that day, which is a relatively small number, as a film is considered to be in wide release if it's in 600 or more theaters. Most blockbusters open on more than 3,000 screens. So the studio is clearly hoping to make up a big chunk of its money on the film with VOD. Let's hope the plan works.

Original story (12/4/13): Hold on to your chairs, Marshmallows. While the wait is by no means over, we finally know how long we have until the release of the crowd-funded Veronica Mars movie. Entertainment Weekly confirms that the picture that nearly broke the internet will hit theaters March 14, 2014, almost exactly a year after its Kickstarter campaign began.

Apparently the plan was for that to be the date for quite some time, but it seems the studio was hedging its bets for a while. “Luckily, no other teen detective movie decided to open in the middle of March,” joked director and Veronica Mars series creator Rob Thomas. As if any other teen detective could hold a candle to Ms. Mars (Kristen Bell).

For those of you who haven’t been keeping up with every detail of the film, the feature doesn’t pick up right where we left off, but rather takes us to Veronica’s 10-year high school reunion. However, she is still with Piz, much to the consternation of many a VM fan. Also — surprise surprise — Logan (Jason Dohring) has been accused of murdering his pop star girlfriend. We’re still not over the fact that he’s not married to Veronica but maybe by the end of the movie... Sorry-not-sorry, Piz.

Get a first look at Veronica’s high school reunion!

Another bit of good news is that the release will be much bigger than the original limited-engagement run discussed at the start of the project. The movie is testing well with audiences according to Rob so there’s no need to “dribble it out there” with a more modest release. We’re putting the date in our calendars as we speak!
