The Walking Dead Season 4 has so far given us a drastically different Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) than the man we’ve seen in past seasons, but while Rick has traded in his gun for some gardening tools, another member of Team Prison has only grown stronger since we’ve seen her last.
Actress Emily Kinney (Beth Greene) tells Zap2it that her on-screen counterpart will be tougher come Season 4. “I feel like it's the progression that one would go through,” Emily says of her character’s new attitude. “If you're going to live in this world and if you're going to stay with it, you're going to try on sort of different ways of dealing. I feel like that's how Beth was. At first she was like, I'm done, I don't want to do this. Then she's like finding ways to help. I think that it's such a difficult situation we all sort of go through these different stages of what's going to work for me to help me deal with this new world.”
Indeed, we've already seen Beth toughen up. When Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) told her that Zack died during the Big Spot supply run in the season premiere, a once overly-emotional Beth didn't even skip a beat when she heard the sad news. Back in Season 2 Hershel’s youngest daughter attempted to take her own life when the pressures of living in a zombie-ridden world were too much for her to handle, but clearly she’s bounced back.
Although Beth may have toughened up a bit, Emily — who is a budding songstress in her own right — says that she does sing again in Season 4. “I do love singing. ... You'll get to see a bit [in Season 4],” she reveals. In Episode 2, "Infected", she sang beautifully to Baby Judith, even if the lyrics were slightly off.
Are you ready for a tougher Beth, or did you like the character better before this transformation?
Season 4 of The Walking Dead premieres on October 13 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
