Last week, The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd revealed that the AMC show’s highly-anticipated spin-off, which is expected to bow in 2015, won’t have any crossover with TWD, and now the original mastermind of the Walking Dead universe, Robert Kirkman, is echoing that train of thought.

When Vulture asked Robert about the upcoming project he first joked about what viewers can expect. “Well, the spin-off takes place in space,” he divulged. “No. I can say we’re not going to pull any characters from The Walking Dead, or the comics. It will be an all-new cast and an entirely new setting.”

Hmm, that sounds awfully familiar! Still, given that he is TWD mastermind, Robert offered a little more insight into the process of creating this new entity:

“To a certain extent, I’m competing with 24-year-old me to create a new Walking Dead thing. I think it will be vastly different. It won’t be a comedy or, like, a lawyer show. It will be about survival in some way but in order for it to justify its existence it has to be different in significant ways from the mothershow.”

While we love what Robert has created with TWD, we understand the need to make the spin-off stand on its own two feet. But what do you think? Should the TWD spin-off be entirely separate from the original show, or would you like to see just a tiny bit of crossover? Share your opinions below!

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
