We may end up wearing gloves and a face mask as we watch The Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 2, “Infected,” this Sunday, October 20. It’s like Contagion all over again.

As we left the premiere, poor Patrick was just turning, thanks to a new illness that quickly took his life. Here’s the Episode 2 synopsis: “The group faces a new enemy; Rick and the others fight to protect their hard-won livelihood.”

One sneak peek showed a little girl screaming for help, and Glenn yelling to Rick that there were walkers in D block. We’re guessing Patrick grabbed some human snacks once he turned, and maybe turned some others and they’re on the loose. That’s a guess, but we’re worried for whoever is living in D.

Comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman told Vulture, “the new threat to the camp will quickly eliminate many of the newcomers we saw in the premiere.” Boom. Premiere director/special effects guru Greg Nicotero added, “At the end, when Patrick dies, you realize that this is not an isolated incident. [Rick’s] pig is dead, we see the walker at the fence [bleeding from the eyes, like Patrick] … it’s a ticking time bomb. Now, all of a sudden, [the virus is] right in the middle of the prison.”

GOODBYE TO KAREN … MAYBE?

We didn’t get to know too many of those newcomers in the premiere, but our minds are going to those little girls who named walkers, those people who greeted finger-lickin’ Daryl Dixon in the food area, and also the people spiking walkers at the fence, like Karen, who came over from Woodbury and actually had a minor role there toward the end of Season 3. One of those fence walkers had bloody eyes like Patrick, and we’ve been told they’re related, so those fence people may be in danger of catching whatever splattered their way.

We’re particularly worried for Tyreese’s girlfriend when you pair the new threat with the Comic-Con trailer and this Episode 3 synopsis:  "A group leaves the prison to search for supplies; the remaining members of the group deal with recent losses.” If you remember, in the Comic-Con trailer, we see Tyreese walking into a prison area with flowers, then looking down at something in horror. Later he gets into a fight and Rick tells him to calm down. He’s also in the car with Daryl, Michonne, and new guy Bob as they go on what we’re guessing is that Episode 3 supply run. Tyreese looks devastated and goes on a rage run against a herd of walkers. We’re guessing he’s grief-stricken from the loss of Karen, although his sister Sasha could also be a victim.

ENEMY WITHIN?

If that isn’t enough to worry about, Comicbook.com saw Episode 2 in advance and said “There’s a B plot in this episode, too, and it’s one that’s far more intriguing than [the premiere’s] various romances. There’s an enemy within, to borrow a previous episode title, and it’s not clear who it is or to what end they’re acting — but if not for the generalized threat presented by the episode’s major development in Cell Block D, that sub-story could very well overtake the show.”

That enemy within may be tied to whoever is feeding rats to the walkers at the fence. We’re going to see that in Episode 2 as well.

No one in the prison is retroactively asking us for advice, but maybe they should just leave the prison. It’s not a good place to be stuck with an illness, even when there isn’t a saboteur at work. Unless that’s exactly what this “enemy within” wants them to do — push them out into the world?
