Michonne (Danai Gurira) is relatively new to the Walking Dead universe, but with the massive influx of Woodbury survivors we saw in the Season 3 finale (which carried over into Season 4), Andrea’s one-time pal got a little lost in the shuffle — at least in terms of her backstory. We know plenty about Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and various members of the Greene family, but Michonne, for the most part, is a mystery.
Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Danai Gurira at the October 11 NYC screening of The Walking Dead: a Decade of Dead presented by Hyundai, and the beautiful actress told us all about what makes TWD so special, and what we can expect from Michonne in Season 4.
Speaking of the AMC hit, Danai tells us, “When you see how much work has been put into this story and these characters, it’s really humbling. And getting to play a chick who’s that badass, it’s really cool. You get to learn all these different things. I mean, I never knew how to ride a horse or use a sword. Most episodes, I end up opening the script and going, ‘Oh, I’ve never done that before!’ And that’s what I love, actually.”
Michonne is certainly one of the more versitale bad asses on TV today, but Danai goes on to say that there are various other reasons why TWD is very close to her heart. “First, it’s the amazing cast and creative team, who are my family,” she began. “Two, all the stuff I get to learn, and three the amazingness of playing this character. She’s one of the most amazing characters I’ve ever come across.”
You can say that again! Still, as amazing as Michonne is, Danai acknowledges that viewers know very little about her — but she prefers it that way!
“What’s really exciting about her is that you know so little about her. There’s so much to play with because you know so little,” Danai explains, before acknowledging that her character has undergone some changes. “She’s evolved — even from the beginning of the third season to the end of the third season. So really getting to alter her has been a real journey.”
As we know (and as we saw a slight preview of in the Season 4 premiere), Michonne will spend much of the time tracking The Governor in an effort to hunt him down and kill him, avenging Andrea’s death. But we can also look forward to more of Michonne’s backstory. For months now, the TWD cast and crew have been hyping Scott Gimple as a showrunner who is particularly interested in character development, Michonne included.
Danai went on to describe the TWD universe as a “war zone”, and we totally agree. She also lays out the dilemma facing Team Prison this season. “ You cannot be who you used to be so who will you become? How will you evolve? That’s the story and it’s what sucked me in and what sucks everyone else in. It’s not about the zombies only, it’s about the people.”
