Working on a massive, emotional show like The Walking Dead is probably a lot like being away at summer camp. Well, a summer camp infested with zombies and stocked with crossbows, guns, and katanas. We all know that lots of naughty things happen at summer camp, like hookups and betrayals, so are these things happening on The Walking Dead set? And the bigger question: Is everyone’s favorite on-screen couple, Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) and Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun), dating in real life?
Well, for starters, The Walking Dead set sounds like it’s got quite the camp-like setup. Lauren tells Rolling Stone, “We all live within two buildings and five seconds from each other, and we all go to coffee and drinks at the same place, so we always get recognized.” Sounds like a setting ripe for canoodling!
Hold on now — don’t get your hopes up about Glenn and Maggie taking their romance off-screen. When discussing how the show has changed her life, the 31-year-old British actress says she gets recognized all the time as “the girl with the Asian guy.”
So we now have proof that they hang out together, but this next quote from Lauren might squash all your hopes: “There are entire websites dedicated to the proof that Steven and I are in a real relationship. Which is always funny, because it's not.” Dun-dun-dun. Well, this doesn’t mean they couldn’t date down the road!
On-screen, Lauren recently chatted about Maggie's torturous separation from Glenn thanks to this flu. While Glenn's life could be in danger, Maggie is one of the only Team Prison members who isn't sick.
Things are not only crazy on-screen, they’ve been somewhat chaotic behind-the-scenes as well. The cast and crew try not to let any drama compromise the artistry of the show — even a showrunner (or two) exiting. The exits of executive producer Frank Darabont — who was fired after the first season and who put Lauren on the show — and showrunner Glen Mazzara directly affected Lauren. The actress reveals to Rolling Stone, “It was difficult for me because I was witnessing these people who had borne the original baby saying goodbye, and it was very shaking for them.”
Lauren fully understands how huge The Walking Dead is and what the show is doing for TV and storytelling. “It's a huge artistic beast. The scope is massive, the expectations are huge and I just think anyone who takes that on is already a hero for jumping into the challenge.”
Steven revealed that he's actually in a relationship, but Lauren’s noted that she is currently unattached. She also revealed her (unexpected) celebrity crush to Maxim: “Jeff Bridges. It’s not a romantic crush; it’s just kind of an everything crush. I love him as an actor, I love his voice, I love his smile. OK, now it sounds romantic — but it’s not!” Uh, Jeff Bridges?!
See what happens with Glenn and Maggie on The Walking Dead every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
