In one of the less gory and violent scenes from tonight’s action-packed Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 2, “Infected” we hear Beth Greene’s (Emily Kinney) haunting, beautiful voice singing a lullaby to Baby Judith while Michonne is doing leg raises in her cell. It was definitely not the typical song you’d sing to a baby, but what was the tune Beth chose to comfort Rick’s little girl?

Beth sang:

“When I’m lying in my bed at night, I don’t wanna grow up. Nothing ever seems to turn out right. I don’t wanna grow up.  How do you move in a world of fog that’s always changing things? Makes me wish that I could be a dog. When I see the price that you pay, I don’t wanna grow up. Nothing ever seems to go my way. I don’t wanna grow up. The only thing to live for is today."

When Michonne comments on the interesting song choice, Beth retorts, “It’s better than ashes or cradles falling out of trees.” Point taken! (Side note: And was it just us, or did Michonne definitely have some strong feelings while holding Baby Judith?)

The song Beth sings is Tom Waits’ “I Don’t Want to Grow Up”, which was also recorded by punk band The Ramones. We can guess Beth is quite the Tom Waits fan. Last season, she sang a sad and memorable acapella version of Waits single “Hold On” at the end of the Walking Dead Season 3, Episode 11, “I Ain’t a Judas”.

Comicbook.com astutely notes that Beth’s lyrics don’t quite match up with the original’s: “Instead of ‘I don’t ever want to be that way,’ Beth sings ‘Nothing ever seems to go my way.’ She also leaves out the line ‘Seems that folks turn into things that they never want.’” Comicbook.com speculates that leaving out this last line might have been an intentional choice by the writers made to obscure Baby Judith’s possible fatal (zombie?) ending.
