Chad Coleman already starred in what was known as TV’s best show ever, but could his latest gig as Walking Dead’s hammer-wielding survivor Tyreese eclipse his turn as reformed boxer Dennis “Cutty” Wise in HBO’s The Wire? Time will tell! Here are seven surprising things you didn’t know about the highly-underrated actor and TWD fan favorite:
The Walking Dead Was Not Chad’s First Foray Into Zombie Territory. He voiced Coach in the first-person shooter video game Left For Dead 2, where he plays one of four characters trying to survive an outbreak of “The Green Flu”, which turns its infected victims into zombies. This sounds like a hybrid of his Wire and The Walking Dead roles!
Chad Was Fired From The Cosby Show. He was hired and then fired as a stand-in for Theo Huxtable when he wouldn’t do what the directors asked of him. The actor opened up a bit about the embarrassing blip in his career on AXS Live, “Oh, god! was such a prima donna! I didn’t even have a job — an acting job! [...] Of course I was fired.”
He Wished He Could’ve Been on... Fame?! When asked if there was a TV show he grew up watching that he wished he could’ve starred in, Chad revealed to GQ, “Fame!” He relates the unexpected choice to his growing up a theater nerd, “I was just a big artistic geek like that. I know, I know. Growing up, I fell in love with the theater early on and I was going to after-school programs, doing theater, and learning about Stanislavski and method and all that. So when I watched Fame, I was like, ‘Wow. I wish I could be on that show.’”
He’s Performed For President Obama. When MKP Celebrity Talk asked him about his favorite role to date (mind, you, this was pre-The Walking Dead), he said it was playing Harold Loomis in an August Wilson play on Broadway called Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Of the momentous occasion, he said, “The President of the United States was in the audience, so I think that was a highlight for me [...] That was something super-special.” Fun fact: Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne, was also in this play!
He’s an Adorable Dad. This 2012 video from Camp Diva’s “Date With Dad” event shows spokesperson Chad and his daughter SaCha ribbing each other about their moves on the dancefloor. Fast-forward to about 1:09 to see Chad tease SaCha, “Y’know, Daddy went Old School on her.”
He Wants to Live to Be At Least 175 Years Old. In an interview with DanaRoc.com, Chad reveals he doesn’t let mere statistics bring him down, “Do you know that the only reason why we think that we are supposed to die is because somebody told us that? We read all of this stuff about life expectancy that tells us ‘Well life expectancy for man is…’ And then we start saying stuff like ‘Boy he lived to eighty. That's a good life.’”
He continues, “That is a limiting thought! Nobody told me that I can't live to be 175 years old, so that is what I am going for!”
In Case of a Real-Life Zombie Apocalypse, Chad Wants His Three Sisters and His Walking Dead Character Tyreese by His Side. The former Wire actor toldComplex his three sisters would most definitely be able to take care of themselves, “Without question, they’d do more than hold it down. They’d hold everyone else down.” Chad told AMCTV.com that Tyreese would be a good guy to have around because he’s “a bona fide leader that can probably find his footing in any situation.” We’d have to agree on that one!
