With Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) off tending to his vegetable garden instead of taking control of Team Prison on Season 4 of The Walking Dead like he has in the past, others have been forced to step up and assume Rick’s leadership position. Since Rick is busy tilling the land, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) has taken over many of his former duties. Norman chatted with Metro US about the evolution of his on-screen counterpart.

“He definitely has more of a leadership role this season. The thing with Daryl is that he is never trying to be Rick,” Norman explains. “When things need to be done he definitely gets them done, but he isn’t trying to lead the whole group. He grew up a lot with the death of his brother. He’s becoming his own person and finding self-worth through helping the other people. You’ll see him in a different place. He doesn’t seem very afraid of anything at this point.”

Daryl’s never struck us as the fearful type, but he’s clearly become more of a team player since Season 1, and we know that Team Prison is beyond thankful for his presence — especially Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride).

As most of you know by now, Daryl wasn’t even a character in the original TWD comics. Norman is well aware that his character is unique and relishes in Daryl’s differences. “Daryl’s storyline is different from everyone else,” he explains. “He’s blossoming in this world. He can take care of himself. He can hunt and track his own food. He can protect himself but he doesn’t have social skills. I think to watch this man become the guy that he is meant to be is pretty interesting.”

We tend to agree with Norman here. Daryl’s badassness and many wilderness skills have made him extra-prepared for the apocalypse. Though Rick will likely be back as the Ricktator soon enough, we’re confident that Daryl could take control of Team Prison should anything ever happen to Rick, even if he isn’t a natural leader like the former cop. As The Powers That Be like to remind us, “No one is safe.”

Do you think Daryl would make a good leader, or is he better off doing his own thing? Vote below!

The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
