You can’t touch this! The Walking Dead Season 4 is now fully awake, treating its 16 million rabid fans to an action-packed — and surprising — beast of an hour in Episode 3, “Isolation.” So many people were kicking arse and taking names, AMC could’ve popped up its own “POW!” “ZAM!” Batman sound effects.
Tyreese (Chad Coleman) hammered down a herd of walkers, but not before getting hammered by Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) fist. Rick got back into his cop groove to solve the killer mystery. A radio voice hinted to sanctuary. Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson) said "dammit!" with great feeling before launching into a glorious flag-waving speech. Glenn (Steven Yeun), Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Nick's #1 fan, Lizzie, are all down with the sickness. And Carol (Melissa McBride) got so down with her bad self with the walkers; it’s just a shame Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) didn’t see her on water patrol 'cause he would've grabbed her for some Pookie play time right then and there.
And we now know who killed Karen and David. It was … Carol. Carol?!
Yeah, last week we thought maybe Carol was getting too harsh with the kids, but to actually kill and burn people? Secretly? Maybe we should’ve guessed it with her survival class secrets, but … good on ya, Robert Kirkman. We did not see this one coming.
How can Carol come back from this? She’s not even herself anymore. She's … almost the new Carl. Some people may defend her, but it seems like she went too far (and it didn't even help). Burning bodies and leaving them in the prison yard? Wow. Will Tyreese find out? Will Rick tell him? Does The Governor (David Morrissey) have any spies in the prison at all, or are all the "bad guy" just our beloved Team Prison folks taking matters into their own hands?
Read on for a full recap of Episode 3:
Glenn is out digging graves for all the people they lost, including Harry Potter glasses boy. (RIP, Patrick!) Glenn and Maggie share a look, but that’s all they can do while they’re separated.
DR. S AND HERSHEL
Dr. S. shakes his head about someone and pops out a knife.
TYREESE TALKS TO RICK - FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
Tyreese tells Rick, Carol and Daryl that he found Karen and David like that. He came to see Karen and saw the blood on the floor, then he smelled it. (Thank heaven we don’t have Smell-O-Vision.) Tyreese is mad as hell. Someone killed them and set them on fire. He wants Rick to find who did this and bring them to HIM. Rick has been down the grief well too. Tyreese pushes Pookie against a fence in his anger. Daryl: “We’re on the same side, man.” Rick keeps saying he knows what Tyreese is going through. “We’ve all lost someone.” Carol tries to calm them down. Rick says she (Karen) wouldn’t like to see him like this. Tyreese slugs him. Total fight. Rick goes to TOWN on Tyreese. Woof! Where did THAT come from? The Ricktator has rage issues. He’s like Sybil. He has Cop Rick, Farmer Rick, The Ricktator, Crazy Rick...
RICK HURT HIS HAND
Hershel tends to Rick’s busted hand. “I wouldn’t plan on much typing the next few days.” Rick has curly hair and a crazy face. Come back, man. Don’t go back to that dark place. At least we know the source of Rick’s broken hand, though. Maybe it won’t get chopped off by The Governor. Hershel’s update: “We just lost 12 of our own, two of ‘em were killed in cold blood. We could be facing an outbreak.” They have another council meeting coming up. Rick says he’s done enough damage for one day. Hershel talks about falling off the wagon. Remember “Nebraska” in Episode 2? Randall? What a mess.
TYREESE IS STILL PISSED
He’s digging graves like it’s his job. Bob comes over to see him, saying he should get stitched up. “When they’re in the ground.” Bob helps him dig.
GLENN IS WORRIED
Glenn’s a worrier, which is good. He asks Hershel if they’re going to be all right. Hershel said the sickness doesn’t have a timeline; it’s different for everyone. Glenn wants to find a way to fight and help.
SASHA IS SICK
Not Sasha! She’s one of the good ones. She wants to see Dr. S. too. This mysterious Dr. S. has been given an awful lot of power. Should we worry about that? She stumbled into D Block to find him. What a disgusting place to be sick. It’s like an asylum in there. American Horror Story would’ve killed for this set last season. We have to tell who it’s starting? What did Dr. S. say?
Everyone who survived the attack in Cell Block D - Sasha, Caleb (Dr. S) and now others - is now sick. Cell Block A is isolation. Glenn is now sick too! Hershel said the illness doesn’t kill them, the sickness does. Hershel suggests the same drugs for animals, that’s what they need. Daryl suggests sending out a group. Michonne volunteers to go with him. “He’s already given me fleas.” Nice. They have to separate the most vulnerable -- the very young and very old. Like baby Judith and Hershel?
CARL AND RICK TALK, THEN RICK AND TYREESE BOND … AND FIGHT AGAIN
Carl is pissed about being in quarantine, but it’s better to be safe. Carol takes some water up to the prison as Rick goes to pay his respects to Tyreese, who is digging the graves. Are they going to make peace? Rick apologizes. Tyreese says “it’s on both of us.” Tyreese said Rick has to find who did this. They didn’t know David much. Did anyone have a problem with Karen or David? Tyreese said no. The person who did this might’ve been trying to stop the illness from spreading. It didn’t work though. Now Sasha, his sister, has it. Tyreese said there seems to be no urgency in finding the killer. “What I’m picking up is, murder is OK in this place now.” Rick says that’s not true, but they have to save lives first. They have to keep this place going. (Do they, though?)
LOTS OF VERY SICK PEOPLE JUST WANDERING AROUND
How is that a good idea? Are they on their way to isolation? If so, it can’t be good to have them just pass by healthy people, right?
CARL IS MAD
He doesn’t like being locked up with kids. He’s mad and he’s got his gun. Rick: “You don’t fire unless you absolutely need to.” Carl: “But you know I might need to, right.” Hide your wives, hide your husbands, hide your kids. Carl is armed and ready to fire.
GLENN IS SICK
Not Glenn! Hurry back with that medicine. Seriously, though, how is this separating the healthy from the sick thing working when they’re all sharing the exact same space. They’re touching all the same stuff. This would appall Kate Winslet’s character in Contagion.
ROAD TRIP NEEDS A FOURTH
Michonne goes to get oil for the car. Daryl said he’s glad she’s there, instead of running off. “You know I’m not running off.” She's going after The Governor, the way he is not. So it’s just going to be her and Daryl “like the old days.” There were old days? Nice. Bob is going with them. They need a fourth person to complete the band, but there aren’t many healthy people left. Daryl finds Tyreese. He doesn’t want to go anywhere while Sasha is in there, but Daryl makes the good point that it’s not going to do any good without meds. At least on a supply run he could be taking action to solve the problem.
HERSHEL HAS A PLAN
He looks at a Java mug. What’s he going to do? Carl asks him where he’s going. The kids are supposed to stay away from Hershel. Hershel said he needs to go out there - to the woods. He’s sneaking out! Hershel vs. Carl. Team Hershel! Carl is going to rat out Hershel to Rick. At least Carl is telling his dad everything now. Carl says he’s going to come with Hershel; he says he has to, but he’s just bored and looking to be involved.
THIS SICK WARD IS AWFUL
It’s a fate worse than death to be stuck in that hellhole. Carol ushers people into the ward. Lizzie is also coughing. Look at the flowers, Lizzie! Carol won’t tuck her in, she has Glenn do it, since he’s the best tucker-in she knows. And he’s sick too. Don’t make poor Lizzie go into the hellhole!
BETH IS STILL WITH JUDITH
She is the official baby holder. Maggie cries talking to her sister about Glenn being sick. Beth basically tells her to suck it up and remember they all have jobs to do. Carol and Beth are getting hard!
CARL AND HERSHEL ARE OUT IN THE WOODS
Remember the last time they were in the woods together, when Carl shot that kid? Hershel said Carl has grown a lot in the last few months. There’s a responsibility about him. It’s done Carl a lot of good to step back. Hershel wanted to be on his own as he clipped greens. Hershel said they may be safer outside those walls, but Carl said he knows they’re not. They find a tent, with a walker next to it. There’s a walker lady with her foot in a trap. Is that our girl Clara? Carl almost shoots her but Hershel said they don’t need to. Why not, though? She could potentially bite or kill someone.
TYREESE AND SASHA SAY GOODBYE
Hopefully they will see each other again. Tyreese should not lose both Karen and Sasha and we should not lose two strong female characters. This show needs more, not fewer! Tyreese says he’s going with the group to the veterinary college to get meds. They could have medicine as early as the next day; they have a chance. It would suck if Glenn or Sasha died, but it would be suspicious if everyone else -- the minor characters -- died and they were the only ones to live.
ROAD TRIP HEADS OUT … BUT FIRST CAROL FLIPS OUT
Bob is an Army medic who can read fancy medical words, so he’s coming along. Tyreese just has to get his gear and he’ll head out with them. He stops to talk to Carol. “I know how you are, you care.” He asks her to look after Sasha, if she can. Carol would be happy to. Nice moment. Then Carol flings her water bucket in frustration. She’s mad as hell too, and spills a lot of water in her anger. We all do it, girl. Sometimes lashing out just makes things worse, but you have to vent somehow.
HERSHEL IS A HERO, DAMMIT!
Hershel doesn’t think he’s doing any good just sitting in his ward. He can help people. He brought elderberries as a natural flu remedy. Caleb (Dr. S.) is too sick to help so Hershel is doing it. Maggie doesn’t want Hershel to put himself at risk. Hershel knows these people’s symptoms need to be controlled. “Listen, dammit: You step outside, you risk your life. you take a drink of water, you risk your life. And nowadays you breathe and you risk your life. Every moment now, you don’t have a choice. The only thing you can choose is what you’re risking it for.” Amen! Emmys reel! But what if Sasha and Glenn survive, but Hershel gets sick and dies? That does make sense…
MAGGIE AND BETH TALK
About their papa, Hershel. Dr. S. is sick and “we all got jobs to do.” They’ll deal with it. “We don’t get to get upset.” Beth struggles to hold back her tears. At least Judith is behaving.
RICK WILL SOLVE THIS PROBLEM
He’s got his Cop Rick hat on, trying to sleuth out the clues of who burned and dragged the bodies. What’s he seeing with the bloody hand print?
CAROL GETS MORE WATER
The walkers are distracted by bicycle wheels - walker TV? - as she’s outside the fence, getting water. But the walkers get bored with the wheel show and start to come after her. Rick sees her in trouble and runs out. Carol would never have dared anything like this even last season. Rick runs down to tell Carol to run. She’s cutting it close! Is it really that easy to pop through the fences? She kills a couple of walkers before getting her knife stuck in one. Rick shoots two to help her. Maybe she should have her own gun, in addition to the knife. “Peace of cake.” Ha.
HEY, WHAT’S ON THE RADIO?
Daryl and Michonne talk in the front seat about running off. He tried to find The Gov too, in the winter? Is that what he was saying? If it was any different he’d be right out with her. They try the radio and hear a voice. “Survive … alive.” In the Comic-Con preview it said “Sanctuary” so maybe they hear that later? In this message they just hear a guy’s broken-up voice, then Daryl loses control of the car and they run into a HUGE herd. Massive, like Atlanta sized. He backs the car up but it gets stuck over a herd. The car is jammed. Never let Daryl drive!
Michonne slices up walkers with her katana, Daryl goes to town with his knife, Bob shoots people and Tyreese sits there like he couldn’t give a poop. He finally gets out of the car and hammers the living BLEEP out of the herd. There’s that anger in action. Michonne, Daryl and Bob leave Tyreese to his herd (!) and run into the woods. That is cold, guys.
TYREESE IS ALIVE!
Daryl has his crossbow up as walkers shuffle into the woods. But Tyreese is on it. He’s bloodied and battered, but alive. It’s like the gymnasium scene from the comics, just outside with a herd. The man has a hammer and he knows how to use it!
HERSHEL HELPS SICK PEOPLE
Dr. S. coughs on Hershel, spraying blood. Hershel takes off his mask and rubs his face with it. Does Hershel have a death wish or what? “If you weren’t in here already, you’d be in here.” The selfless doctors. Hershel tries to help Glenn too. Glenn says it sucks; after everything, he gets taken out by a glorified cold. Hershel said they all have jobs here.
CAROL IS THE KILLER?!
Rick says it was a stupid thing she did, going out there like that. She does a lot for them, the kids. She sacrifices a lot. Rick: “Is there anything you wouldn’t do for the people here?” Carol: “No.” Rick: “Carol. Did you kill Karen and David?” Carol: “Yes.” Wowwwwwww. May not want to mention that to Tyreese. We thought maybe she was getting too cold with the kids last week, but this is severe. At least she isn’t like a serial killer. … Right?
Rick and Carol go on their own run. Michonne isn’t sure she’s still angry. They head to the school.
Are you shocked about Carol? We had money on Dr. S. or Bob, dammit!
