It’s been eight days since the Season 4 mid-season finale of The Walking Dead first aired, but we’re still replaying every moment of the installment in our minds. AMC also created a behind the scenes video, which gives fans an even more complete look at the intense and gory mid-season ender.

Comic book creator/ executive producer Robert Kirkman tells the camera, “Our mid-season finale, we really wanted to top everything that happened in Season 3,” and showrunner Scott Gimple sums up the central theme of Season 4, Episode 8 in one sentence about The Governor, (David Morrissey). “He has a choice between joining the prison, and still trying to take the prison, and he burns that bridge.”

Not only did he burn the bridge, but he destroyed the prison and beheaded Hershel Greene. There’s even some footage of Scott Wilson during one of his last days on set, and even though we’re sure that this was a very emotional time for him, he kept a brave face for the cameras. “Hershel is meeting his maker,” the veteran actor says with a laugh.

Episode 8’s director Ernest Dickerson who was also behind the camera when Herschel made his debut in Season 2 said, “I brought him into the show and now I’m taking him out.” It’s the circle of life at work, you guys.

We’re still reeling over Hershel’s brutal death, but seeing how well Scott handled everything has made it sting a bit less.
