The Walking Dead is based on a lie! There were supposed to be aliens — or at least hints to aliens — and instead we're stuck with a fantastic zombie story that was adapted into our favorite TV show. Sigh. What a rip-off

The Hollywood Reporter shared a clip from the feature-length Comics in Focus: The Image Revolution, which is coming out in January 2014. In the video, Robert Kirkman — Walking Dead comic book writer and future AMC show executive producer — talks about how he got Image Comics to publish his zombie series.

Today, it seems like it would be a no-brainer (groan), but it took some fancy Governor-worthy manipulation to get into print.

“When I pitched The Walking Dead originally, it was turned down, simply because there had never been a successful zombie book in the history of comics," Robert said. Image publishers Eric Stephenson and Jim Valentino, also in the video, felt all zombie movies were the same and wanted something new, some hook to make the story stand out in an overcooked genre.

"I wasn't willing to accept no for an answer," Robert continued. "And so I said, ‘Oh, well, I forgot to tell you that this is actually a big setup for an alien invasion.” As Robert pitched it, the zombies have been created by an alien race because the aliens want to take over Earth and they want to wipe out humanity first. Over the course of the zombie story, he'd be laying these hints to the aliens.

So Eric Stephenson pitched Robert’s alien story to Jim Valentino, who was more amenable to the idea since he didn't think the alien angle had ever been done. And so they accepted the book, based on the aliens. Once three issues had come out, Eric praised Robert for getting him to read a zombie comic, although he wondered where the alien Easter eggs were. Robert just laughed and said there is no alien invasion! He just made it up. "So yeah, I kind of tricked them into accepting The Walking Dead,” he said.

Brilliant! Although, that may be the perfect spin-off scenario. What if it was true and the walkers were created by aliens. This whole virus thing had to come from somewhere, so why not an advanced species?

Would you like to see aliens join TWD universe or are you glad the series is more grounded and down to Earth?

The Walking Dead Season 4 returns on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
