There she is … sort of! The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9, and AMC is now regularly doling out new photos and sneak peek videos. This new one is the first to even hint at Carol Peletier’s (Melissa McBride) return. Still, at least it’s a hint! This is a short promo, but it has some interesting intel to share. Here are six points to ponder:
1. Carol is Back! But When? And Where? And With Whom?
Carol has been gone since Episode 4, when Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) dumped her in the suburbs. We have no idea what she’s been doing since then, but we figured AMC was going to give her The Governor (David Morrissey) treatment — he wasn’t featured in any first half promos, even though everyone knew he was coming back. They didn’t want to ruin the surprise of how and when he would return. We’re expecting Carol to cross paths with Tyreese (Chad Coleman) and maybe the girls in the second half. This is just a little teaser for whatever she does. All we see is a hand holding a gun, but fans believe it’s Carol’s hand, so that’s a start.
2. Beth Is Everywhere — and She’s Going to Have to Protect Herself
Anyone anxious for more Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) action should be thrilled by the latest promos, since the youngest Greene girl is all over the place. At the start of this video, we see her at a campfire, telling someone what sounds like "We aren't the only survivors. We can't be." Is she talking to Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus)? Does he think they are the only survivors? Later in the promo, we see Beth with a knife, backed against a tree as a walker approaches. Is she finally going to kick some arse?
3. Is Daryl on His Own?
Daryl and Beth leave the prison together but it's possible they separate at some point. This promo shows Daryl inside a house/building with walkers. Maybe Beth is in there too and the editing just cuts her out, or maybe she's waiting outside. Or maybe they argued over what to do next. What if she wants to go back to the prison to look for her sister Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) and other Team Prisoners and he wants to just keep moving on?
4. Carl, Rick, and Michonne Hit Rough Times
Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) appears to be on the ground toward the end of the promo, edging away from a walker. Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) also looks at his beat-up self in the mirror. Those clips are probably from Episode 9 itself. It's also possible the Michonne (Danai Gurira) scene, clearing walkers and sobbing to the sky, is from Episode 9 as well. The midseason premiere is meant to feature those three characters in particular, with scenes closely tied to the post-prison comics. The second half is supposed to start “bleak” but get “more hopeful” by the finale.
5. Tyreese Is Confused
What's he looking at? He has his hammer out as he moves forward, like he’s trying to get a look at something. Then he turns around and just looks surprised in general. We last saw him following the young girls out of the prison, although there's a theory that he went back to save baby Judith. Tyreese could be at the center of a very interesting storyline if he is indeed with Lizzie, Mika, and Judith and also runs into Carol out there.
6. Glenn and Maggie Are Still Separated — and Maggie Looks Horrified
We've seen the Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) clip before, but it shows him in the dark, holding up some kind of lantern. He looks bloody, so something must've happened to him since Maggie got him onto the bus. But at least he's alive. We also see Maggie backing away from something that seems to horrify her. A group of dead bodies? She was last seen at the prison with Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.) — were they killed? They aren't featured in this promo and we've only seen one brief clip of them in a past video. Are they OK?
Watch the video below and see what you glean from it. Do you agree that it looks like Carol’s hand on the gun? When will we see her? And what happens to Beth and Daryl?
