In The Walking Dead universe, The Governor (David Morrissey) has only been dead for a few days at most, but seeing as how this show is all about surviving in the post-apocalyptic world, you better believe  that The Powers That Be have a new threat of some kind in store for the back half of Season 4.

Executive producer Gale Anne Hurd confirmed as much when she chatted with FEARNET.com about Season 4’s remaining episodes. First though, she opened up about some new characters that will be appearing soon, perhaps as early as this week’s Episode 10: ”Inmates."

“Well, it has been announced that we will have some characters from the comic books joining our show, and we are really excited. I can’t say quite when they will join, but we are excited to welcome the characters of Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita," she dished. "They are quite different than other characters who have joined the show, so that is exciting. Their sensibilities and missions in life are quite different. We’ll see how they interact with anyone they might encounter.”

But what about the new threat? “As always, the growing number of zombies remains a tremendous threat because they are on their own, exposed, and vulnerable because they are no longer behind the walls of the prison,” Gale continued. “There are also people, perhaps, just as evil as the Governor out there.”

Color us intrigued! We know that comic book villain Negan is a long way off, but perhaps comic book creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman has cooked up an entirely new big bad for the remainder of Season 4. We’ve been hearing little tidbits here and there about another newbie named Gareth, and even though we know very little about him, there’s something about the name Gareth that makes it sound deliciously villainous in its own way.

When pressed about this “new evil” Gale revealed, “I can’t go into exactly what form it takes, but as the show has always proven, there is no such thing as ‘smooth sailing’”

The flu, the destruction of the prison, Hershel’s decapitation, and several other difficult obstacles certainly prove that point!
