Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) wouldn’t be Glenn Rhee if he didn’t wake up in the prison post-battle in a precarious spot. We love ya Glenn, bu we’re baffled by how you always get yourself into these tricky situations.

When we first see Glenn towards the beginning of The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 10: “Inmates,” he’s literally dangling from the now-split catwalk, just feet away from a ravenous group of walkers. As Steven explains in the behind-the-scenes video below, “He has just taken an explosion hit and he’s knocked out. For him to wake up and see not a single soul, and he looks down he sees the faces of walkers, of people that he knows...”

We agree, that’s pretty terrifying! And while it looked like Glenn was one wrong move away from falling to his death, stunt coordinator Russell Towery made sure that Steven was in no real danger. “We had a harness on him and a tagline, so he could go all the way to the edge but not over,” he explained.

We thought that first reveal of Glenn lying on the catwalk was pretty neat, but Steven had another favorite moment from the episode. He explains, “The coolest moment for me was the moment of silence when he walks into his cell block and he sees that nobody is there.” That was more eerie than cool for us, but it probably felt akin to being in a museum or school after hours. Except with a bunch of deadly walkers thrown in.

After taking a spin around the now desolate prison, Glenn had to work his way out, making his way through a horde of walkers while wearing riot gear, which Steven notes was no easy feat, explaining, “That riot gear is tough to work with, it’s very, very hot, it doesn’t let you breathe, and we’re doing it in 90-degree weather.”

The stunt team says Glenn’s entire escape was choreographed, and they even put a helmet over the camera to make it look like we were seeing everything from Glenn’s point of view. “What a clever and amazing shot to really seal in how horrifying that moment is,” Steven concludes.
