After plenty of time spent at the prison and Hershel Greene’s (Scott Wilson) farm before that, it’s been quite sometime since we’ve seen Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) kill anyone — walker or human — with his bare hands, but that all changed with last Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead, Season 4, Episode 11: “Claimed.”

When Rick went into another house for a little snooze, he had to think fast when he woke up to the sounds of other men in his presence. After a solid amount of time spent hiding under the bed, Rick was able to sneak into the neighboring bathroom, which he thought was vacant. Much to Rick’s surprise, one of the men was on the toilet doing his business, and Rick knew the only option he had to save himself was to kill this stranger.

What ensued was a grizzly, weaponless, fight that looked super intense, but was actually very well choreographed with Andrew and a stuntman/actor. The brawl is dissected in the behind the scenes video below. “It was always scripted that we use the Uzi strap to strangle,” Andrew explains when talking about how he was directed to take out this bathroom baddie.

John Sanders, the show’s property master continues, “We took the actual strap and a rubber machine gun, replaced the real machine gun, wrapped it around his neck and a choking ensues.”

The fact that Andy was only using his hands actually made the stunt tricky and potentially more dangerous, since something really could go wrong. “You have to be incredibly spatially aware, you have to trust the other person. It’s a lot of eye contact but you have to make impact. It’s a dance,” Andy explained.

TWD’s leading man also noted that the scuffle was difficult because of the manner in which it needed to be carried out. “He’s got to dispatch this guy as quickly as possible in the quickest way possible. And that’s the challenge,” he revealed.

Take a look at Andy kicking some ass in the video below and be sure to tell us your thoughts!

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
