When we met Abraham Ford, (Michael Cudlitz), Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt), and Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos) in The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 10: “Inmates”, many people believed that Eugene’s presence signified that a cure — or, in the very least, hopes for one — might be near. In the comics, Eugene says he’s a scientist who knows the cause of the outbreak, though it’s later revealed that he’s totally full of it. It’s too early to tell if the TV show will follow that exact trajectory, but it turns out that may not even matter.

Abraham and his group recruit Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Tara Chambler (Alanna Masterson) for their mission to Washington D.C., but Glenn wants out as soon as he wakes up and realizes that he’s traveling farther and farther away from Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan). “Glenn hears there’s possibly a cure, but he’s not going to be deterred,” showrunner Scott Gimple says of Glenn’s determination to find his gal in the behind-the-scenes video below.

“I don’t know if he doubts them, but I don’t know if he’s willing to go on a frantic mission for that when he has one key thing still left to fight for,” Steven reasons.

To Robert, this dilemma in which Glenn finds himself shows what’s truly driving the characters who live in this post-apocalyptic world.“It shows what I’ve always felt is important about these characters,” the comic book creator states. “They’re not really interested in finding the cure; they’re always going to be focused on their survival and keeping the ones that they love safe.”

Glenn is so determined to find Maggie and keep her safe that he even takes on Abraham, punching him in the face to shows that he’s literally willing to fight for his lady love. The fight was real and Glenn was certainly no match for Abe, but as special effects guru Greg Nicotero notes, the brawl was never going to escalate to anything major. “Even though they’re fighting and even though they’re arguing, still ultimately there is a connection because they’re survivors,” he explains.

Are you surprised that Glenn is more interested in finding Maggie than “saving the world”? Check out the video and tell us what you think below!
