We've been wondering for four whole seasons what the smoldering, sulking Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) did before the apocalypse, and finally, we have some moonshine-soaked details from Season 4, Episode 12: "Still." Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) even made several guesses over the course of the episode — prison guard, motorcycle mechanic — but it took a little liquid courage for Daryl to finally give an overview of his pre-apocalypse life. As it turns out, inquiring about his job was really the wrong line of questioning, as he didn't really have one.
"You wanna know what I was before all this?" Daryl finally confessed to Beth, as the pair calmly sat on a porch after a super-emotional, drunken freakout. "I was just drifting around with [Merle Dixon], doing whatever he said we were gonna be doing that day. I was nobody. Nothing. Some redneck asshole, and an even bigger asshole for a brother."
Even Daryl admits, "I'm a dick when I'm drunk," so we can see where he got "asshole"... although we're inclined to say that he's something much more remarkable than how he sees himself. Beth brought up that apocalypse survival is actually something that he's really, really good at, but Daryl shrugged it off.
"I'm just used to it, things being ugly," he said, gesturing toward the house that looked an awful lot like his childhood home. "Growing up in a place like this."
Daryl might get kind of down on himself after a healthy portion of moonshine, but we're sure glad he's around — and we're really glad to finally know a little bit more about his past.
The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on AMC.
