When Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) happened upon the fancy Georgia country club in Season 4, Episode 12 of The Walking Dead, she was on a quest for her first bit of booze — but her travel buddy Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) had other things on his mind: raiding dead bodies for money and jewels.

We were a bit surprised by Daryl’s choice of loot given money has little to no value in the post apocalyptic world and he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who rocks man jewelry on the regular. In a post-”Still” interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Norman was asked if Daryl’s thievery was a reflection of the directionless, unmotivated person he used to be.

“It could be,” he said, before offering up alternate uses for what he took. “The money is for building fires since it's not worth anything. Gold and jewelry, maybe you can trade it for something. They're taking anything they can. I don't think Daryl is the type of character who needs a wardrobe change; you grab what you can grab and maybe you can trade it for something. But you just never know.”

Since all the people in the country club were long dead we don’t know if we’d go so far as to classify what Daryl did “stealing,” but it is interesting to see the items he gravitated towards. But don’t ever insinuate that he’s gone to jail, because that generalization makes him understandably angry. Just ask Beth.

And while we’re glad Beth was able to grab some fresh clothes we see Norman’s point that Daryl wouldn’t really care about things like that. Still, a wardrobe change could be nice, especially since they both looked really hot (we mean this literally) and seemingly haven’t had a chance to wash their clothes.

What do you think of the items Daryl lifted off of the country club people? Was it a sign of him returning to his roots, or was he merely being practical? Tell us your thoughts and theories below!

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
