For years now Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) has been saying that Daryl needs a dog, and although comic book creator and The Walking Dead executive producer Robert Kirkman is against the idea of a canine confidant, Norman kind of got his wish in Season 4, Episode 13: “Alone”.

In the ep Daryl and Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) found shelter in a meticulously organized, food-stocked funeral home of sorts, and there was a pretty cute one-eyed dog who seemed to be roaming the property. Daryl didn’t seem to like the pup much, and we’re still wondering if the dog was used as some sort of diversion so whoever took Beth could separate her from Daryl.

As you may remember, Daryl heard the dog bark and set off his noise traps just before he opened the back door to the house and unknowingly let a horde of walkers inside. This forced Beth to run ahead to where she was presumably kidnapped by several people in a car with a white cross on the back.

That bark was the last we saw or heard from the pooch, but it turns out that the white-haired dog has quite an interesting story of his own. On Talking Dead we learned that the dog’s name is Dooley, and though his one eye gave him the “perfect look” for an apocalypse survivor, this dog is truly special. Apparently Dooley lost his eye defending his owner from a carjacker, making him adorable and heroic.

Since Daryl left the house and was picked up by Joe (Jeff Kober) and his motley crew, we’re pretty sure we’ve seen the last of Dooley. But if Robert ever decides to give Daryl a dog for real, we nominate Dooley for the job!

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
