We love Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) as much as Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) loves pudding, but for some reason this backwoods badass just can’t seem to get it together when it comes to love.

Daryl and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) have been playfully flirting for years now, but not much has ever come from their moments together aside from a few sly smiles and longing looks. Daryl has even less of a history with Michonne (Danai Gurira), but there is some chemistry there as well.

Most recently Mr. Dixon has been paired off with Beth Greene (Emily Kinney), but comic book writer and TV show executive producer Robert Kirkman has already warned us against investing too much energy into this potential romantic pairing. He echoed those same sentiments in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying that our beloved Daryl is just unlucky in love.

“They’re growing close, just as anyone who is stuck in that situation would grow close,” Robert told the mag of Beth and Daryl. “Now whether or not that is going to evolve into a romantic relationship remains to be seen. They’ve already been separated, so my hopes for that to happen are pretty low.”

Of course Robert is referring to Beth’s mysterious kidnapping and Daryl getting picked up by Joe (Jeff Kober) and his crew of baddies. As far as we know they are both alive, but it doesn’t sound like they will be  joining forces again anytime soon. “There’s a pretty slim chance of that relationship coming together and it continues the narrative of poor old Daryl is unlucky in love. But they’re definitely clinging to each other for survival and growing a bond that forms when you’re in that kind of that situation,” Robert continued.

Again, it’s looking less and less likely that we’ll witness a Beryl hookup, so will go ahead and ask this less involved question: Do you think Daryl and Beth will be reunited before Season 4 is over? Tell us your thoughts and theories below!

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
