If you’re Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) in the second half of The Walking Dead Season 4, how would you react to seeing Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) again?

He banished her from the prison back in Episode 4, after he sleuthed out that she killed Karen and David. She told him the truth when he asked her what she did. Well, she just shot Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino) after Lizzie killed Mika (Kyla Kenedy) and prepared to kill Rick’s own daughter. Lizzie was also revealed to be the one who was feeding rats to the walkers at the prison, weakening the prison fences. Melissa McBride told The Hollywood Reporter this intel could get back to Rick — and it’s a lot for anyone to take in.

“I would imagine if they're reunited and he's asking, she would tell him everything that happened,” Melissa said. No more secrets. THR asked how Rick — as a father — might respond to learning of what Carol had to do. They asked if it might make the wedge between them bigger, but it could also bring them together because Carol helped to save baby Judith.

“We'll have to wait and see,” Melissa said. “There's a lot going on between the time he banished Carol. Even when he comes back to the prison, he turns to Maggie and says, ‘There's no time to doubt yourself,’ which I thought was great after Carol gives him the watch with how she sees time. There was no time for her to doubt herself when she put Karen and David down. A lot has happened. Maybe perspectives are changing. We'll see.”

A lot has happened since then — they lost the prison and a lot of the redshirts living inside, they hit the road, got separated, Rick had to kill a guy in a house, and he’s still looking like the walking dead himself after The Governor (David Morrissey) almost killed him. You have to imagine his prevailing emotions will be gratitude and relief that Judith is still alive, and he may understand that Carol had to keep Lizzie away from Judith and everyone else. It’s hard to see him holding on to past anger and judgment when they’ve all had to do so many tough things. Plus, Tyreese (Chad Coleman) forgave Carol. He’s not exactly the keeper of Karen and David’s souls, but he was apparently closest to them and he was the one who put Rick in charge of finding the “murderer.” If Tyreese can forgive, Rick probably can too. We can change! We’re not too far gone — Rick said it himself.

Last month, showrunner Scott Gimple told TV Guide the events of Carol’s return would “change her and Rick.” So we’re not expecting the same kind of tension like at the end of “Indifference.”

Do you think Carol will be welcomed back into the post-prison fold, at Terminus or wherever we end up in the season finale? Rick might just be glad to see another familiar face.

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
