Remember the fight between Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Shane (Jon Bernthal) on The Walking Dead Season 2? Rick ended up killing Shane, then Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) had to put walker Shane down with a bullet.

That’s close to how it went in The Walking Dead comics in Issue #6 —  although Shane’s death came much earlier in the story in print than on TV, and Carl is the one who shot him in the neck when he was still human and Rick put him down as a zombie.

Comic book writer Robert Kirkman just had a Reddit AMA and a fan asked, “How different has the story turned out from what you envisioned when you started the comic? Are there any characters you wish died earlier, died later, or didn't die at all? And how do you respond to criticisms concerning the differences in the TV show and the comic?”

RK answered, “The story has evolved and continues to evolve. Originally my idea was that they live in a high school for a while... that changed to a prison very early on. There were characters that were going to die very early on... but didn't, and vice versa. I honestly considered killing RICK in issue 6 and making the comic about Carl having to grow up with this guy he saw kill his father. But in the end, I decided against it. That was never the plan, but it was a thought that popped up that I entertained while I was writing issue 6.”

The comic books are still being written, and it’s possible RK could do something similar at this point, if Rick dies and Negan takes on the Shane role.

It’s not like RK doesn’t love the heck out of Carl. Back in 2012, he told Daily Dead, “Yeah, Rick could go at any time. I think that Carl could carry the book now. I know that there are interesting stories I could do with him, Andrea, or Michonne. To a certain extent, I think it would be interesting to follow Negan for a little bit and see what that story would be like.”

So Rick got a stay of executive in Issue #6 but he could still die soon in the comics, which are about to hit Issue #124. We will learn his “final fate” very soon.

Obviously we’re glad Rick survived to this point and we hope he keeps going on and on, but do you wish Shane had survived? Would you like to have followed Carl having to get along with Shane, even after Shane killed Rick? So many things would’ve been different if Shane had lived...

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
