The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 13, “Alone,” started with a flashback to right before Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.) joined Team Prison. As we saw his isolation, the haunting “Blackbird Song” played as a theme. It sent a lot of people searching online for the song, and some may have been surprised to see it was from American Idol winner Lee DeWyze.

Lee talked about his process in writing the song in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Lee said he got into TWD after his wife had her appendix out and they were just sitting on the couch, apparently looking for something to watch. They decided to watch TWD and that turned into a marathon which got them both hooked. Now it's their favorite show.

He was drawn to the AMC show’s music, and it inspired him to write his own. "I said out loud, 'I want a song in the show.' I grabbed my guitar and started writing. My wife said, 'Are you writing that for The Walking Dead?' I said yes, and she asked, 'Do they know that?' I laughed. 'No.' "

Lee wrote the song in his living room and told THR he finished it over two evenings. He said he was mainly inspired by three TWD characters. "As a viewer, Daryl, Glenn and Hershel are the three I relate to the most. I definitely relate to a Daryl type."

Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson) are very different guys, but they’re all tough sonsofb*tches. It would be interesting to hear more about how Lee relates to Daryl in particular, but he didn’t expand on that. He just said he had no idea if the song would get on the show or "end up in the abyss with all of the other music I've never released." He worked hard to get this one out there, but even so, it had to be a thrill to have "Blackbird Song" not only play on the show, but run for about four minutes at the start and end of the episode. After Ep13 aired, he said his Twitter feed blew up with mentions of the song.

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
