Season 4 of The Walking Dead finished in the United States at the end of March 2014, and each episode of Season 4 aired in various parts of Europe just a day later. American audiences flocked to the AMC hit by the millions, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, European viewers were just as enamored with the post-apocalyptic drama.

THR reports that The Walking Dead drew record audiences across FOX International Channels. So just how many people tuned in?

According to FIC, who is in charge of broadcasting the series outside the U.S, just about 25 million viewers across 14 European markets caught Season 4. Not bad! By comparison, 16.1 million Americans watched the Season 4 premiere alone. THR notes, “The show hit ratings highs for a pay-TV series in several territories, with the Season 4 finale on Fox in Germany and Spain taking the number one slot for a primetime broadcast across all pay-TV channels.”

Many American shows may be released weeks or even months after their initial broadcasts in the U.S., but for the first time ever TWD Season 4 was made available to European viewers just 24 hours later, which FIC says likely contributed to the show’s record-breaking international success.

Given Season 4’s mega success abroad, FIC says they plan to continue to launch Season 5 of the series globally “as close as possible to the American schedules.”
