There's now a rumor floating around that Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) was testing with a green screen arm, presumably hinting to Rick losing a limb in Season 5, which is now filming. In the comic books, Rick lost his hand in Woodbury, thanks to The Governor, and Dale actually lost a limb to The Hunters, which is closer to where the TV show is in terms of the comic books story.
But don't read too much into it, because the rumor — which was spread over Twitter and now on Reddit — is apparently false. The Spoiling Dead Fans weighed in on the chatter, tweeting, “Just so everyone knows, Andrew Lincoln was not seen filming with a green sleeve on.” There was apparently an old picture that got Photoshopped or whatnot. Every so often these things pop up and fans get worried — like the Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) death photos that were actually clips from the actors’s other TV/film projects.
Just recently, comic book writer/show creator Robert Kirkman was on The Writers’ Room and explained why Rick didn’t lose his hand back in Woodbury.
“I like the fact that he lost his hand in the comic,” RK said. “To be perfectly honest, the practical difficulties of having a guy who doesn’t have a hand is extremely complicated in the comic and would be impossible in the show. Because the comic book doesn't move. For instance, in a recent issue, I think it’s 122 or 123, Rick is standing on top of a truck. It would take him quite a while to climb on top of a truck with one hand, but we just show him standing on a truck. And you’re reading that comic, and you’re like, ‘There he is on that truck.’”
However, after calling it “impossible,” RK added this little joke/tease: “Yeah, but spoiler alert, [Rick] loses his hand in Season 5, so…”
That just feeds into this rumor, but don’t worry about it. So far, it sounds like another classic false alarm. It really would cost too much money to have to green screen every scene with Rick’s hand, and would it even be worth it — especially when they already did something similar with Merle?
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
