It’s frustrating to have to wait until mid-October for The Walking Dead Season 5 to start, but at least we’ll be well-prepared for the new season with tons of updates on the Season 4 discs.

As you may already know, Walking Dead Season 4 will be released on DVD/Blu-ray on Tuesday, August 26. A new press release was just issued with some details on the upcoming features. Here’s the intro (via Dread Central): “August. Baseball season is in full swing. Barbecues have been blazing since Memorial Day. And fans can count another August tradition when Anchor Bay Entertainment releases THE WALKING DEAD: THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON Blu-ray + Digital HD with Ultraviolet and DVD on August 26th.”

They added that each format will contain five loaded discs, but the “Blu-ray + Digital HD with Ultraviolet presents the episodes in pristine 1080p high-definition and lossless Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio.” So that’s fancy. Also, as with previous releases, the complete Season 4 package “rewards fans with hours of bonus features, including never-before-seen production footage, deleted scenes and audio commentaries, with ultra-exclusive content only available on the Blu-ray release, including additional audio commentaries and several ‘extended’ episodes seen for the first time!”

Love a good extended episode! They don’t go into detail about the audio commentaries, but there was a story a while back saying Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) —  who doesn’t usually watch the show at all — was planning to do commentary on Season 4, Episode 14, “The Grove.” He can’t watch himself on screen, but since he’s not even in that episode it doesn’t count.

The press release does mention the tradition of unique McFarlane Toys packaging for the special editions. “Following in the ‘shuffling’ footsteps of Season 2’s ‘Walker Head’ and Season 3’s ‘Walker Aquarium,’ THE WALKING DEAD: THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON will be available in a Blu-ray limited edition ‘Tree Walker’ package. SRP is $79.99 for the Blu-ray + Digital HD with Ultraviolet, $69.98 for the DVD and $129.99 for the Blu-ray limited edition.”

So the extra special editions aren’t cheap, but if you save your pennies now you may have enough by August. Are you planning to get S4 in one of the home video formats?

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
