The Walking Dead TV show is currently filming Season 5, but the comic book series is up to Issue 129 — as of today, actually. The current comic book volume jumped ahead two years ahead, so the Rick Grimes of the 2014 comics is vastly different from the Rick Grimes played by Andrew Lincoln on TV.
Robert Kirkman, who writes the comic books and executive produces the AMC show, talked to Business Insider about working with two Ricks. “The Rick Grimes that's in the show, he hasn't quite developed to the point that the Rick in the comic book has. He eventually will, but by the time he does that, the Rick in the comic book will be completely different and on another track — or he'll be dead. If there's ever a case where I go, ‘Oh, that would be a really cool thing to do with Rick,’ okay, now I need to decide if that's going to go into the comic or the show."
Kirkman isn’t just whistling dixie when it comes to that line about Rick being dead in the comics. RK has already promised that Rick will not survive the entire run of the book. But he’s also talked about the series going on for 300 issues, so we’re not panicking quite yet.
If Kirkman wants a Rick move for the comics he can just write it in and let artist Charlie Adlard bring it to life on the page. But if he wants it on TV, he has to talk to showrunner Scott Gimple, who has his own vision for remixing the comic books. That’s what makes the TV show so exciting — even people who know where the story is going in the books don’t really know where the TV series is headed because it’s operating in an alternate universe.
If you read the books and watch the show, which current version of Rick do you prefer — TV or comics?
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
