Just because Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his son Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) are in the midst of a zombie apocalypse doesn’t mean this duo can’t have some normal moments every now and then — like a good father-son lesson.

In the Walking Dead deleted scene below — from Season 4, Episode 16 — Rick and Carl do just that. From what we can tell, this scene was meant to take place shortly after Rick, Carl, and Michonne (Danai Gurira) encountered that screaming man who was being swarmed by walkers. Carl rushed to help the stranger, but Rick held him back, and now Carl wants to know why.

Noting that things are different now because the trio is on their own (remember, this is before they arrived at Terminus), Rick explains to his only son: “I want you to be safe, Carl, above everything else, above everyoneelse. Do you understand?”

When Carl answers that he does, Rick continues with his lesson. “You didn’t think about. You just did it. That’s who you are. Carl, you’re a man. You’re a good man. Your mom would be proud. I’m proud. But I didn’t like it.”

And Rick’s internal struggle rears its ugly head again as he’s torn between raising a good, moral son and keeping him safe.

Ultimately Rick says in conclusion, “You gotta be careful out here, more careful than before.” Rick had said that not long ago he would have reacted the way Carl did — by attempting to help the screaming man — but we have no doubt that his deadly encounter with The Governor (David Morrissey), which lead to Hershel’s demise, proved to Rick that he needs to value survival above all else.
