Over on Spoil the Dead they posted a little spoiler note on The Walking Dead Season 3 that they found … somewhere:

“According to a very accurate source there will be two more major deaths before the end of the season and one will have an agonizing impact on Rick's crew. According to the source, both deaths will occur close to the end of the season, with one definitely taking place in the finale."

We’d already been warned to expect more deaths, so there’s no reason to think that note isn’t true. Who will die? Will the Team Prison death be first, leading to, maybe, The Governor's death as second? Outgoing showrunner Glen Mazzara had an interview with Scenestr that may give us clues on who won’t die. He was answering a question about why someone had to die on Episode 10 and why it had to be Axel.

Here’s part of his answer:

“When The Governor shows up, he's not there to invade the prison or launch a major attack, he just wants to send a message to these people. And as he's doing that, he will look ineffectual if it does not result in a death. You know, we want to have a big gun battle, but he's not invading, so he's just going to snipe at somebody, and that's going to result in a death. Otherwise he looks completely impotent.

Now the question is, whose death? To be very honest, I didn't want to kill off any of the major characters. We obviously didn't want to kill Rick. Carol was on the chopping block, but I didn't want to kill Carol, because we have a story coming up with her. We looked at the possibility of killing Beth. I don't think that actor knows that. You know, I love Emily Kinney. But I felt that would have had too big an impact on the group. It would have just devastated poor Hershel. It would have taken him down a path I didn't want for the rest of the season. And we were already dealing with Maggie's feelings about her sexual assault by The Governor, so we didn't want to complicate that with mourning for her sister.

We talked about killing Carl in that episode! We really did... unfortunately, you know, by the process of elimination, we got to Axel. Now I like Lew Temple's performance of Axel very, very much, and we were just starting to find that character and develop him in a way that we loved. And we probably could have had more stories with him. But The Governor was the main character in that piece. We needed to make sure he was not ineffectual. Because otherwise he's not a bad guy that could possibly take out our guys. So that was really important.”

The wording of that makes it sound like maybe Beth is safe for the rest of the season — and perhaps the rest of the Greene family? And Rick. And Daryl! They just wouldn't dare. But what about Carl? Mazzara didn’t add the part about the actor not knowing. And we’d already heard they were planning to kill Carol on the episode earlier this season where T-Dog died instead. But more Carol story seems to be coming, so she sounds safe.

What do you make of that? Does it give you any clues? Do you have theories as to which "major" characters might be dying later this season? Maybe Little Ass-Kicker/Judith, since that death would certainly devastate the group? Michael Rooker says Merle isn’t going anywhere but you never know with that guy.

Update: According to Laurie Holden (Andrea), Carl is the one character who WON'T die. "The only person who I  think is safe is Carl...and I'm not just saying that because I think he's going to be the John Connor of the next generation of The Walking Dead," she told E! News.
