Last we saw Carol (Melissa McBride) — on The Walking Dead Season 3, Episode 4 — she was going into the light, like Carol Anne in Poltergeist.

Carol was hoping to help T-Dog (IronE Singleton) not turn into a walker, even after being bit. T-Dog knew his number was up, but he wanted to get Carol to safety before the inevitable happened. When he and Carol were cornered, T-Dog threw himself into a group of walkers to give her time to open a door and spill into the light. That was the last we saw of her. At the end of the episode, the other surviving characters just assumed she was dead.

So is she dead?

Executive producer Robert Kirkman told Entertainment Weekly, “Well, you didn’t see a body. You never know though…”

Kirkman further told The Hollywood Reporter, "I don't want the show to be completely bleak, so there's always some level of hope but it's certainly not looking good. I'm sure we'll see her again, we wouldn't want her to be never heard from again. The way in which she returns, who knows what light we'll see her in when she comes back."

Exec producer Glen Mazzara told THR, "What really happened will continue to play out. I can promise that we don't tease out mysteries in a frustrating way. People will have answers moving forward for certain things. It's part of a larger storyline that will be wrapped up in the first part of the season."

Mazzara also added to TV Guide that more death will be coming. "You should always expect death on The Walking Dead. That's what we do. It's a story of survival and the stakes are that high. It's part of the fabric of this world. We take these deaths very seriously. As we've said, no one is safe."

Dun dun DUN! Is Carol going to be the next Sophia? How sad would that be, for mom to follow daughter, especially since Carol was really coming into her own on Season 3. She’s less of a victim needing protection than she was on Seasons 1 and 2. Wouldn’t it be great if Carol actually returned in time to save someone else’s life, for once? That would be a nice character arc, for her to swoop in and save Daryl (Norman Reedus) or the others, instead of just turning into a zombie.

UPDATE: According to Spoil the Dead, we'll learn Carol's fate next week (November 18) on Episode 6, "Hounded." They say Daryl will search for Carol in the prison and find her ... alive "but almost powerless," whatever that means. So, if this is correct, Daryl will basically save Carol's life. Again. It would be great to see Carol alive again, especially since she's a mother and they could use her help to take care of Lori's baby, but we were really hoping she'd be the one to save the day. Maybe that's coming!
