Next up on the conveyor belt of The Walking Dead showrunners is Scott Gimple. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gimple joined TWD on Season 2 and wrote several episodes, including co-writing Episode 10 with departing showrunner Glen Mazzara. He also wrote Season 3, Episode 6 and the upcoming Episode 15.
Gimple will be the new showrunner as of Season 4, which will reportedly start pre-production in Georgia in March. After original showrunner Frank Darabont was sent packing, Mazzara was named #1 and made Gimple his #2. Now whoever Gimple has as his #2 should probably be on standby for possible promotion.
Why is Mazzara leaving? In the official statements, it sounded like a mutual decision based on disagreement about where the show should go from here. But THR had another story quoting sources that made it sound like 1) comic book guru Robert Kirkman is "very proprietary" about maintaining a certain amount of control, and 2) production was shut down "several times" in the second half of Season 3 due to lack of material, which was laid at Mazzara's doorstep as the showrunner.
Mazzara will still be running the show for the back half of Season 3, which starts airing February 10 on AMC. Good luck to the new guy!
