Was Arizona Too Mean to Alex on Grey’s Anatomy Season 9, Episode 2?

On last night’s episode of Grey's Anatomy (Season 9, Episode 2: “Remember the Time”), we saw a new side of Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) that we hadn’t seen before. And to be honest, we were scared.

As fans know, Alex (Justin Chambers) was actually supposed to be on the plane that crashed in Season 8. But Arizona took his place at the last minute. We saw signs that Alex was feeling guilty about that in the Season 9 premiere (Season 9, Episode 1: "Going, Going, Gone"), but it finally came to a head last night.

When Alex came to visit Arizona and give her an update on a patient in pediatrics, Arizona began a cruel speech about why it should have been Alex who got maimed in the plane crash instead of her. As a nice person with a wife and baby at home, why did this have to happen to her, instead of Alex, who “has no one,” and is a horrible person.

Alex says to Arizona, “If I could trade places with you, I would.” Arizona’s response? “And I would let you.”

Do you think Arizona was way too harsh to Alex? Or was her seething anger justifiable in the face of her forever-changed life? Is she really to blame for her malicious words, or is it not the real Arizona? After all, even Callie (Sara Ramirez) said, “She’s not my wife!” in reference to the way she’s been acting.
