Ian told The Hollywood Reporter he was actually “super excited” when he found out Ezra is PLL’s mystery villain. “There's only so much they can do with Mr. Fitz, the character, because it's all about the girls,” Ian says. “The fact that he was going to take a bit of a sharp turn in the opposite direction and defy expectations, I was super excited to get into that.”
Fair point, Mr. Harding, even we have found Ezra’s storyline somewhat disconnected and dull at times — but does Ian feel like he’s letting them down with his character’s transformation into PLL’s chief villain?
Nope! “I think it's a whole new side to Mr. Fitz and it's a whole lot of fun for me to play,” said Ian, adding in a TV Guideinterview that having Ezra and Aria together and happy would make for “boring television as well as boring acting choices.”
“I really trust and love the writers,” Ian continues. “They were able to not take it someplace really tacky, and I have faith that they're going to justify it in a way that it's not, ‘Oh man, he's evil!’ or ‘He's crazy!’ Because that sounds like a really stupid idea.”
Plus, Ezra as “A” actually makes a lot of sense. “It was too convenient for him to just be Aria's love interest,” Ian says. “It's too convenient that I'm just kind of there and all this stuff that's happening to me, but I'm not really connected to it all...It was not really a shock, more of they told me this is how it's going to go and I said, ‘Great, it's about time.’”
Another red flag was the way Ezra always seemed to conveniently disappear for stretches of time, especially in the Season 3 Halloween special, which saw Ezra suspiciously missing the festivities for “an interview,” only to pop up right after the mayhem ceased.
Also suspicious? The wad of cash Aria finds in an unemployed Ezra’s dresser drawer in Season 3, Ian said: “When Aria finds money in his dresser, and he's able to play it off like, ‘Listen, I'm so sorry, it's just something I do. My past is hard.’ (Laughs.) It just seems a little ... ah, you made that up.” What are you up to, Fitz?
