On April 7, Team Usher singers Bria Kelly and Madilyn Paige belted out a duet to “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders. Usher paired to two together, hoping that Madilyn’s sweetness would complement Bria’s “carefree” sound.

After deciding on a song that could simultaneously work towards their strengths as well help them show another side to their sound, Bria and Madilyn went to work on their battle song. During rehearsals, both Usher and mentor Chris Martin thought that Madilyn was slightly intimidated by the song. At the same time, Usher advised Bria to tighten up on notes for a smoother sound.

Taking their coach and mentor’s notes into consideration, Bria and Madilyn made leaps and bounds during their last rehearsal and brought it all to the stage on the night of battles.

Shakira thought the battle was great with Bria working her dynamics throughout the song and Madilyn being comfortable in her own skin and stepping up. Adam Levine said that Madilyn continued to surprise and that Bria showed a lot by stepping out of her comfort zone. Blake Shelton agreed that he wanted more from the battle, but thought that neither gal really stood out.

Usher thought that even though the performance wasn’t the greatest, both ladies grew since the start of the competition and he would have to choose one of the ladies to continue on. When it was time to make a selection, Usher went with Bria, but Blake jumped in with his final steal and kept Madilyn in the game.
