On March 24, Team Usher blues singer Bria Kelly and pop singer Tess Boyer belted out a duet to “Pieces of My Heart” by Janis Joplin. Usher paired the ladies together, hoping that they can take the song and interpret it as best as they can.

During rehearsals, mentor Jill Scott encouraged Tess to shed her pageant girl ways and get lost in the song. Bria, on the other hand, was told to get a little more “guttural” with the lyrics and give the song is desperate grit. At their final rehearsal, both Jill and Usher noticed that Tess had taken their advice and got lost in the song, but still needed to become a bit more vulnerable. As for Bria, while the singer performed as expected, her final note was off key and coach Usher told the singer to hit her notes and hit them correctly.

Both ladies took the stage for a fierce battle to the iconic tune. Shakira called the battle “awesome,” with Tess playing to the dynamics of the song and Bria playing up on her beautiful voice. Adam Levine told Bria that he’s still a fan of hers, while Tess impressed him and acquired a new fan. Blake Shelton complimented Bria for doing what he expected, but the country crooner was impressed by Tess’s sound. Coach Usher was pleased with both singers and thought that Tess’s massive improvement showed him that she possessed something within her. However, Usher thought that Bria’s voice was able to connect to the song and chose to keep her on his team. But it wasn’t the end of the road for Tess. Blake snatched the singer for his team with his final steal.
