Naya Rivera’s (Santana) had a tough spring/summer, but the Glee actress is putting all of that unwanted drama behind her and making the most of her free time before Glee Season 5 starts shooting next month.
Instead of just relaxing and taking a nice vacation (though we bet that’s in the cards as well) Naya expanded her artistic horizons and stepped behind the camera to direct a PSA short for Welcome.us, the home of Immigrant Heritage Month. Naya shot the short on location in New York City and Brooklyn earlier this month and we’re thrilled to say that you can already check out the finished product.
Upon the PSA’s release earlier today, June 24, a proud Naya tweeted, “Had so much fun directing this! Thank you to @Welcome_us. Hope you all enjoy it!”
The short, which runs just over three minutes, reads as a love letter of sorts to New York (and on a larger scale, America) as various people throughout the city pass along a sealed letter. Each time the letter reaches a new set of hands we learn a little bit about the person holding it, namely their history in America and how long they’ve been in the country.
The PSA is meant to highlight the diverse backgrounds of people living in America today, and the awesome camera work just adds another dimension to the whole thing as the viewer is able to get a real feel for the New York City streets, the Brooklyn waterfront, and lastly, Times Square, where we finally get to find out what this mysterious letter says. For a first time director we think Naya did an amazing job, way to go girl!
