On May 19, Team Usher singer Josh Kaufman gave a rousing performance of “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele.
There’s kind of an unspoken rule on this show that you don’t sing Adele, but if anyone can really do it flawlessly, it’s Josh, who managed to outsing his coach this evening. However, Usher reminds his mentee that it’s not all about being pitch perfect, but showing emotion with his performance.
Taking to a candlelit stage, Josh in all white everything, he did bring a good deal of intensity to his performance. (The pyrotechnics helped.) At this point it’s become a bit of a cliche to drop to your knees in a performance to amp up the emotion, but it worked for us this time. Josh clearly left it all on the stage.
Adam Levine had almost no time to give any feedback after the huge applause. In fact, the only other coach who could speak after was his coach. Usher talked about how much ground Josh has traveled during his journey on the show, the highs and lows, the fact that he nearly went home only to be saved. It’s hard to argue with, but we’re sure Christina Grimmie and Jake Worthington will have something to say about that!
