On May 12, Team Shakira singer Kristen Merlin gave a rousing performance of “Gunpowder & Lead” by Miranda Lambert. Looking back on her upbringing in her hometown of Hanson, Massachusetts, Kristen recalled the amount of energy and fun she had while gigging around. Because of this, Kristen decided to dedicate her performance of the Miranda Lambert tune to all those who know her as the crazy, rambunctious country crooner.
Hitting the stage with her rendition of “Gunpowder & Lead,” Kristen received a standing ovation from her highly impressed coach Shakira. Adam Levine told Kristen that her performance was just another example of how far she’s come as a performer, and all the growth she’s made through the competition. Blake Shelton didn’t have much critique for the country powerhouse, who covered his wife’s song, other than to say that he liked her more happy approach to the song (which is about shooting a man, by the way) as opposed to his wife’s usual anger-filled sound.
Usher called Kristen’s rendition “incredible,” while Kristen’s coach Shakira showered the singer with compliments. Calling Kristen a “rock star,” Shak went on to tell the singer that she rocked the stage, and represents not only the minority, but proved that she deserved to be in the Top 5. Shakira then gave America three reasons why they should vote for her: her unique voice, her work ethic, and her ability to represent every person out there.
